Marseille Buiten was commissioned to design the outdoor space for the Norbertus Gertrudis Lyceum in Roosendaal, a secondary school that will annually accommodate approximately 1,400 students. With the expansion of the school, where the new building stands next to the old monumental school building, a unique opportunity arises not only to increase the school’s physical capacity but also to optimize the outdoor space.

The design for the outdoor space at Norbertus is based on a clear and understandable main structure. This structure has been carefully designed to enhance the interaction between the old monument and the modern extension. As a result, the monumental avenue is preserved, while the main walkways are clearly indicated. This ensures that both the monumental and modern buildings are fully appreciated.

The outdoor space is designed as a versatile environment that meets the needs of the students. There is ample space for students to get fresh air, engage in sports and physical activity, or meet with one another. The outdoor space includes logistical areas, a central social square, a private vegetable garden, and various sports elements. The Norbertus Gertrudis Lyceum can now look forward to a new learning and living environment that supports the growing student population and contributes to a positive and dynamic school experience.
