The Municipality of Zwolle is advancing an ambitious plan to make the city centre largely car-free by constructing several Mobility Hubs. In 2023, it was decided to include one of these hubs in the Weezenlanden-Noord area development, accommodating around 500 cars. From this hub, it’s roughly a ten-minute walk to the Grote Markt. A new residential neighbourhood is being developed next to the hub on one side, with the Provincial Government building directly on the other—offering excellent opportunities to meet various parking needs.
The decision was made to build the Hub beneath the current Luttenbergstraat. Our task was to create a design concept for three scenarios, which would serve as the basis for evaluating the chosen market party. Each of the three designs explored different levels of surface parking and aimed to optimize connections with Schuurmanstraat, the main link to the city centre, and the Almelose Canal, a “green corridor” extending from the project area toward the city centre. The connection to De Wezenlanden Park was also a significant consideration.
Each scenario was designed to integrate seamlessly with the Mobility Hub layouts by Barcode Architects. We worked closely with them to develop the ambition document as comprehensively as possible.
